Modelling the SEQ koala distribution under current and future climate scenarios

When: Wed April 16, 2:30-4:40 pm AEST

Description:

In preparation for a workshop at ICCB in June, we are offering the Geospatial Share group a sneak peek of a session modelling the current and future distribution of the iconic arboreal diprotodont, the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus). This workshop will cover a general introduction to species distribution models (SDMs), how to access freely available species records and environmental layers (current and future), and how to fit, validate and make predictions from SDMs using a coded example. We will also cover considerations when fitting SDMs, such as presence-only and biased records and how to deal with them, and a quick overview of the pros and cons of different SDM algorithms.

Requirements:

We will be downloading koala presence records from the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) via the ‘galah’ package and downloading spatial layers from the EcoCommons platform.

It will be helpful to check that you have access to ALA and EcoCommons prior to the session by signing up. If you are affiliated with one of the listed Australia institutions in the Australia Access Federation this will be the most straightforward way (see AAF list here). Or submit a user request form for EcoCommons if you do not have access. We will provide a rendered script so you don’t need to run any code, but if you want to run the code during the workshop it will be helpful to have the galah, terra, sf, predicts, corrplot, pROC and dismo R packages installed.
